No expedition has been the same, and I never know what to expect. The art style is gorgeous, the theming is outstanding, and the gameplay is deep and fun. It takes the elements of room based exploration from tabletop RPGs, mixes the dungeon exploration and punishing difficulty of rogue-likes, and meshes in some turn based combat all wrapped up in a delightfully terrifying package that’s unlike any game I’ve ever played. There is no singular game that I can say is like Darkest Dungeon, so in that regard it’s very unique. I found this mechanic extremely successful at conveying the dark terror that your party faces. The end goal seems to be fighting the final boss who appears to be some sort of Cthulu like presence, but it seems like the main enemy isn’t a boss but rather the darkness and madness that overtakes your adventurers.ĭuring an expedition your party is constantly under stress, which can either be a good thing or a bad thing for your party.

However, I feel this is also a strength, because the game is filled with obscure puzzles necessary to progress, ones that could easily be brought to tabletop. The game wears it's Indiana Jones influence on it's sleeve, with main character Lemeza being a whip wielding archaeologist in a fedora who has a rivalry with his father Shawn. However, every area of the game has a similar mirror: Gate of Guidance/Gate of Confusion, Chamber of Birth/Chamber of Extinction, Graveyard of the Giants/Mausoleum of the Giants. Most obvious is the Temple of the Sun and Temple of the Moon, which mirror each other map wise. Map wise, the game does something really smart, thematically pairing up areas. Within, remnants of the previous 7 civilizations remain, from an extinct race of giants to a group of immortal prophets who dwell within hidden rooms throughout the temple. Setting wise, it's an ancient temple said to be the source of all life on the planet.

La Mulana is what I would call the platonic ideal of a video game megadungeon ripe for adaptation to tabletop.
